Faculty of Agricultural Sciences

The art and science of cultivating the soil, growing crops and raising livestock is known as Agriculture. It includes the preparation of plant and animal products for people to use and their distribution to markets. The 1950s constituted a critical period in India’s agricultural evolution. At the time of our Independence in 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru mentioned that ‘Everything else can wait but not agriculture’. This was because our Independence was born in the backdrop of the great Bengal Famine when more than two million people died due to starvation. In 1960s when India was grappling with frequent droughts, Green Revolution came as a God’s blessing. The Green Revolution was meant to denote that the pathway for the advance of food production is increase in productivity per hectare, not area expansion.

Agriculture has always been a lifeline for India. Even though with age, India has made a mark in various spheres and has progressed in the manufacturing sector by leaps and bounds, but agriculture still remains one of the key drivers of the economy. Agriculture, as the backbone of Indian economy, plays the most crucial role in the socio-economic sphere of the country.
