Department of Civil Engineering Laboratories

The Department has excellent facilities for carrying out teaching and research activities in various disciplines of Civil Engineering. Some important facilities in the Department are:

  1. Structural Engineering Laboratory
  • Simply supported beam to measure deflection.
  • Continuous beam apparatus to measure deflection.
  • Pin Jointed Truss apparatus
  • Column with different end conditions

 

List of experiments:

  • Deflection of a simply supported beam and verification of Clark-Maxwell's theorem.
  • To determine the Flexural Rigidity of a given beam.
  • To verify the Moment- area theorem for slope and deflection of a given beam.
  • Deflection of a fixed beam and influence line for reactions.
  • Deflection studies for a continuous beam and influence line for reactions.
  • Study of behavior of columns and struts with different end conditions.
  • Experiment on three-hinged arch and experiment on two-hinged arch.
  • Deflection of a statically determinate pin jointed truss.
  • Forces in members of redundant frames.
  • Experiment on curved beams and unsymmetrical bending of a cantilever beam.

 

  1. Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory

The Geotechnical lab has the equipment necessary to analyze all soil characteristics some of which are:

  • Triaxial testing Machine
  • Unconfined Testing Machine
  • Standard Penetration Test Apparatus
  • Permeability Test Apparatus
  • Compaction Testing Machine

  • Determination of in-situ density by core cutter method and Sand replacement method.
  • Determination of Liquid Limit & Plastic Limit.
  • Determination of specific gravity of soil solids by pyconometer method.
  • Grain size analysis of sand and determination of uniformity coefficient (Cu) and coefficient of curvature (Cc).
  • Compaction test of soil and Determination of Relative Density of soil.
  • Determination of permeability by Constant Head Method.
  • Determination of permeability by Variable Head method.
  • Unconfined Compression Test for fine grained soil.
  • Direct Shear Test
  • Triaxial Test and Swell Pressure Test

 

  1. Transportation Engineering Laboratory

Materials testing system for dynamic and resilient modulus of sub grade soils, impact value of aggregate.

  1. Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory

Some of the important equipment in this lab are:

  • Tilting Flume
  • Reynold’s Apparatus

  • To determine the meta-centric height of a floating vessel under loaded and unloaded conditions.
  • To study the flow through a variable area duct and verify Bernoulii‟s energy equation.
  • To determine the coefficient of discharge for an obstruction flow meter (venturimeter).
  • To determine the coefficient of discharge for an obstruction flow meter (orifice meter).
  • To determine the discharge coefficient for a Vee notch or rectangular notch.
  • To determine the coefficient of discharge for Broad crested weir.
  • To determine the hydraulic coefficients for flow through an orifice.
  • To determine the friction coefficient for pipes of different diameter.
  • To determine the head loss in a pipe line due to sudden expansion / sudden contraction/ bend. To determine the velocity distribution for pipe line flow with a pitot static probe.

 

  1. Surveying Engineering Laboratory

The Surveying Lab consists of an assortment of state-of-the-art equipment for performing various engineering measurements, some of which are:

  • Total station
  • Digital theodolite
  • Auto Levels

  • Measurement of distance, ranging a line.
  • Measurement of bearing and angles with compass, adjustment of traverse by graphical method.
  • Different methods of leveling, height of instrument.
  • Different methods of leveling, rise & fall methods.
  • Measurement of horizontal and vertical angle by theodolite.
  • Determination of tachometric constants and determination of reduced levels by tachometric observations.
  • Plane table survey, different methods of plotting.
  • Two point & three point problem.
  • Determination of height of an inaccessible object.
  • Setting out a transition curve. Setting out of circular curves in the field using different methods.

 

  1. Environmental engineering laboratory

In environment lab we have following instruments

  • BOD incubator for a given waste water sample.
  • COD digester
  • Water and soil analysis kit

  • To determine optimum Alum dose for Coagulation.
  • To find MPN for the bacteriological examination of water.
  • To find the turbidity of a given waste water/water sample
  • To find B.O.D, COD and D.O. of a given waste water sample. 
  • Determination of Hardness of a given water sample
  • Determination of total solids, dissolved solids, suspended solids of a given water sample.
  • To determine the concentration of sulphates in water/wastewater sample.
  • To find chlorides in a given sample of water/waste water.
  • To find acidity/alkalinity of a given water sample

  • To carry out the Split Tensile and Flexural strength of Concrete.
