Seminar on “Media a political socialization tool to change the society”

On November 16, 2017 Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of DAV University, Jalandhar, organized a seminar on National Press Day, 2017. Dr. K. K. Rattu an eminentmedia personality, Dr. Sukhnandan Singh of Dev Sanskriti University, Haridwar, Mr. Raman Meer, Editor, Dainik Bhaskar, Jalandhar, eminent Scientist and VC of DAV University, Dr. A.K. Paul and Registrar, Dr. RekhaKalia Bhardwaj, and Dean Student Welfare, Dr. Jasbir Rishi, were present among the distinguished dignitaries .In his opening remark, Dr. K.K Rattu threw light on the significance of this day. He spoke about the changing face of press and the long journey of National press Day. He shared his vast experience on media and how press has influenced the modern-day social life. Hon’ble VC, Dr. A.K Paul, emphasized on the role of press on nation building.  He said that media is a means of political socialization that has the potential to transform people into citizens and link them to national and political culture.

Expert Lectures

  • A special lecture by Dr. S. S. Dhillon was organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication on January 17, 2018. Dr. S. S. Dhillon is an eminent journalist and writer of Great Britain, who is also the consultant editor of Punjab Times, London. Journalism has changed in the course of these few years. In this modern information hungry society information technology and journalism is not a mere source of information education and entertainment. This new digitization of media has unlocked many avenues of jobs for youths. In a special lecture organized by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Dr. S. S. Dhillon, spoke on the changing trends of English and Punjabi journalism in Great Britain. He also highlighted the transformation of print media to e-journalism. According to Dr. Dhillon, the change is an inevitable process of life. The population of Punjabis in Great Britain would furthur increase to 30 percent affecting the quality of news published in England. 
  • A dialogue on “New media and news” was organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass communication of DAV University, Jalandhar, on 23 February, 2018. Prof. B K Kuthiala, Former Vice Chancellor of Makhan Lal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Mass Communication, Bhopal, was the chief guest on the occasion. He stated in this lecture that honest and truthful journalism is the need of the hour rather than a propagandist reporting. He also reiterated that news in the contemporary world has lost its moral value and it is a high moral obligation for all of us to reinstate it to sustain journalism as one of the strongest pillars of democracy.
  • An interactive session on the functioning of Radio was conducted by the Department of Journalism and Mass communication of DAV University, Jalandhar, on 22 August, 2018. RJ Ranbir from Radio Mirchi was the speaker on the occasion. “Radio is all about listening so who have the good voice can make their future in radio”, he shared his views. He interacted with the students of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and told them about the working of radio, scope and future available in the field of radio.The students were greatly inspired by the success story of RJ Ranbir.
  • The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, DAV University, organized a Press Visit of Dainik Jagran for the students on 31 Auigust, 2018. At the press, students were exposed to the practicalities of newspaper production. They learned the production process and interacted with the sub-editors and other members of newspaper management and production team.
  • The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, DAV University organized a one-day workshop on Radio production techniques on 6 September 2018. MJ Mannat and Prabhjot Kaur, Programming head of Big FM, were present on occasion and an interactive session was observed. After the interaction round, students also worked on the scripts and learned to write and prepare script before it actually goes on air.
